DHAKA, March 23: The distraught West Indies coach Ottis Gibson had few words to offer excuses for his team’s diabolical display against the ruthless Pakistan side and conceded his team was outplayed in every department of this lopsided encounter after his captain Darren Sammy failed to attend the post-match briefing.
“It is my job to explain to you what exactly went wrong while our captain hasn’t come. We’re very, very disappointed with the performances we put in today and to be honest we just stumbled into the quarter-finals after good performances against Ireland, Bangladesh and the Netherlands. But we still have yet to beat one of the big boys,” Gibson said.
“We had a very good team meeting last night and had been here before when we beat Bangladesh convincingly. Unfortunately it was a game we’ve got to forget and prepare well for the Pakistan series back home next month.”
Looking ahead to the future of West Indies cricket, Gibson said big efforts are required to revive it and there’ll be serious decisions to be made by the board.
“The West Indies cricket for the last 10 years or so has been pretty much the same with roughly the same crop of players. But having said this, I think this tournament has seen the emergence of a few good young players and these young players will be the ones on whom our future planning will be done.
“Looking forward, there is no time between now and then before the next series [against Pakistan] and big decisions would be made for the way forward.”
