Health/Rehab Report on Wahab Riaz, Junaid Khan

LAHORE–October 27, 2014: Following is the Health Bulletin on Junaid Khan and Wahab Riaz from Dr. Sohail Saleem, General Manager, Sports Medicine, PCB, based here at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), under whose expert watch and supervision the duo is being put through recovery and rehabilitation.

Wahab Riaz

“Wahab Riaz presented to us with significant osteochondral defects in the lateral tibial condyle (bone damage), advanced chondromalacia patella (damage to the cartilage under the knee cap) and suspicion of a tear to the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus (outer knee cartilage). After examination and investigation that lasted four days from Oct. 15 to 19, 2014, with the decision in favour of conservative management, his rehabilitation at National Cricket Academy commenced on October 20.

“His daily routine consists of knee specific exercises, generalized fitness training, pool work out, physiotherapy sessions, bowling and batting sessions. He did start batting last week on Friday and by the end of Monday's proceedings he must have completed three batting sessions under supervision of Mohtashim Rasheed. On Monday he did his first shadow bowling session with Mohammad Akram and bowled 24 pain-free balls. His work on the physio’s table consists of manual therapy techniques to achieve the desired fitness results before the beginning of the New Zealand series. I am pretty much satisfied with the progress he is making.”

Junaid Khan

Recently performed MRI in a local hospital in Lahore, revealed a Grade 3 osteochodral fracture along the anterior surface of the medial femoral condyl with underlying bone edema. There is also intra-substance degeneration within the posterior horn of the medial meniscus.

“Junaid Khan is undergoing a conservative management plan for his injury. Apart from consultation with local orthopedic surgeon in Pakistan, Junaid's reports are also being seen by orthopedic surgeons abroad. His final course of action will be decided in couple of days.”
