Kingston, Jamaica, 16 August 2021: West Indies took a 1-0 lead in the two-match ICC World Test Championship series against Pakistan at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica on Sunday courtesy a thrilling one-wicket win on the fourth-day of the match.
Fast bowler Kemar Roach turned out the unlikely hero with the bat as he steered his side to the target adding 17 runs for the tenth-wicket with player of the match Jayden Seales who had earlier in the day taken his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket after West Indies had crashed to 151 for nine in their 168-run chase.
Pakistan bowlers led by Shaheen Shah Afridi (four for 50) and Hasan Ali (three for 37) fought hard to make the seemingly small fourth innings chase incredibly tough for the hosts.
Jermaine Blackwood was the other batter to star for the West Indies, the right-hander stroked 10 fours in his 55 off 78 balls, Blackwood added 68 runs for the fourth-wicket with Roston Chase (22) to resurrect the chase from 16 for three.
Pakistan kept chipping away as West Indies lost wickets at regular intervals with Shaheen, Hasan and Faheem Ashraf (two for 29) making things tough for the host batters.
Earlier on day-four, Pakistan were bowled out for 203 after resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 160 for five. Babar top-scored with 55 off 160 balls (seven fours). Hasan scored a quickfire 28 off 26 balls (two fours, two sixes) to set-up what turned out to be one of the most thrilling fourth innings chases in Test history.
Nineteen-year-old Seales became the youngest West Indian fast bowler to take a Test five-for, he ended with figures of 5-55 in 15.4 overs. Roach took three wickets for 30 runs.
The second match of the series will be played at the same venue from Friday 20 August.
