Iftikhar Ahmed, Umar Amin and Faizan Riaz slam centuries; Ahmed Bashir bags seven-fer on second day of first round

Lahore, 27 October 2024: Centuries from Test batters Iftikhar Ahmed and Umar Amin, as well as Islamabad Region’s Faizan Riaz headlined the second day of the opening round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2024-25. Additionally, Lahore Region Whites’ Ahmed Bashir took career best figures of 7-27.

Group A

Islamabad Region v Abbottabad Region at the National Ground, Islamabad

Islamabad Region finished the second day on 296-3 with a healthy 313-run lead over Abbottabad Region as Faizan Riaz struck an unbeaten century (145, 170b, 21x4s) putting on an unbroken 197-run fourth wicket partnership with Sarmad Bhatti (93 not out, 166b, 14x4s).

Earlier, Abbottabad’s first innings was wrapped up for a mere 100 runs in 39.3 overs with a 17-run deficit. Nusratullah stood out with six wickets for 14 runs in 15.3 overs.

Faisalabad Region v Lahore Region Whites at Diamond Ground, Islamabad

Faisalabad Region, the runners-up of the last Quaid-e-Azam Trophy edition, were asked to follow on by Lahore Region Whites after being bundled out for 91 in reply to 276.

The day began with Khurram Shahzad registering figures of 5-71, his seventh first-class five-fer, to restrict Lahore Region Whites to 276. Faisalabad, however, had no answers to Ahmed Bashir’s spell as the pacer returned career-best first-class figures of 7-27 in 12 overs.

Following on, Faisalabad closed day two with 103-3 in 25 overs, still 80 runs behind, with Atiq-ur-Rehman unbeaten on 48 off 66 balls hitting eight fours.

Hyderabad Region v Larkana Region at Marghzar Cricket Ground, Islamabad

Larkana Region took nine deliveries on day two to take the last Hyderabad wicket, wrapping their first innings for 311. Larkana were 243-7 in 84 overs by close of play on day two, trailing by 68 runs.

Akbar-ur-Rehman and Faraz Aziz top scored with 48 and 41, respectively. Test all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, who walked into bat at No.5, fell for 32 off 75 balls with the help of three fours.

Group B

Multan Region v Rawalpindi Region at Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi

Umar Amin struck his 33rd first-class century to help Rawalpindi gain a 194-run lead over Multan Region by the close of play with the score reading 450-7 in 103 overs.

Umar (169, 228b, 19x4s, 2x6s) put on a 228-run fourth-wicket stand with Aqib Shah (65, 148b, 7x4s) after joining forces on 92-3. Abdul Faseeh (47, 108b, 6x4s, 1x6), skipper Shadab Khan (37, 26b, 6x4s, 1x6) and Jahandad Khan (33, 23b, 5x4s, 1x6) made useful contributions.

Taimur Ali (41 not out, 62b, 6x4s, 1x6) will be on the crease with Ali Hasnain at the start of play on day three.

Peshawar Region v Karachi Region Whites at Ashfaq Cricket Ground Sirdheri, Charsadda

Peshawar Region racked up a mammoth total of 546 all out in 128.1 overs after continuing from their overnight score of 365-3. Iftikhar Ahmed struck his 15th first-class century while Azam Khan remained unbeaten for 58 off 63 balls hitting 10 fours and two sixes.

In reply, Karachi Region Whites scored 144-3 in 44 overs by close of play trailing by 402 runs. Khurram Manzoor (69, 154b, 10x4s, 1x6) made an unbeaten half-century while Rameez Aziz contributed with 42 off 60 balls including five fours and one six.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir Region v Bahawalpur Region at Abbottabad Cricket Stadium

Bahawalpur Region were bundled out for 229 in reply t0 AJK’s first-innings total of 238. Bahawalpur’s Muhammad Ammar (82, 158b, 12x4s, 1x6) scored a gritty half-century to help his team recover from 117-5 while skipper Abid Ali amassed a 70-ball 43 hitting six fours.

AJK were 47-1 in 14 overs with a lead of 56 runs at the close of play.

Group C

Karachi Region Blues v Quetta Region at Rana Naveed Academy, Sheikhupura

Karachi Region Blues require 149 more runs to win as they closed the day with 54-1 in 24 in pursuit of the 203-run target. Earlier, Quetta Region were bundled out for 115 in their second innings, with a lead of 202 runs.

After wrapping up Karachi Region Blues’ first innings for 60 all out in 26.5 overs, Quetta were restricted to 115 courtesy of Aftab Khan’s 6-42 in 14.2 overs.

FATA Region v Sialkot Region at Jinnah Stadium, Gujranwala

FATA Region added 75 runs to their overnight score of 316-7 as they finished with 391 all out in 101.4 overs. Amad Butt completed his sixth first-class five-fer (5-72).

In reply, Sialkot Region were 193-2 in 62 overs, trailing by 198 runs. Azan Awais scored his maiden first-class half-century (51, 89b, 6x4s, 1x6) while Abdul Rehman (84 not out, 190b, 9x4s, 1x6) and Mohsin Riaz (42 not out, 93b, 6x4s) will be on the crease for Sialkot on day three.

Dera Murad Jamali Region v Lahore Region Blues at Saeed Sports City Bedian, Lahore

DM Jamali Region closed the second day with 22 for no loss, leading by 154 runs after Lahore Region Blues were skittled out for 178 runs in reply to DM Jamali Region’s first-innings total of 310 all out.

Earlier, DM Jamali Region added 56 runs to their overnight score of 254-5 as Lahore Region Whites’ Nisar Ahmed bagged 5-63 in 29 overs.
