Sohail five wickets haul give Pakistan slight upper hand
Pakistan enjoyed a good day on the first day of the third Investec test match at Edgbaston. Misbah successfully won the toss and elected to bowl. The decision was vindicated as England were bowled out for 297 at close of play and Sohail claimed his first five wicket haul.
Misbah-ul-Haq correctly called heads at the toss and Pakistan elected to field. Since 2005 no side batting first at Edgbaston has won the test match.
Pakistan made two changes from the team which had played at Old Trafford with Sami Aslam and Sohail Khan coming in to replace Shan Masood and Wahab Riaz the players to drop out.
There was swing in the first half hour but Cook and Hales survived. On one occasion Cook nearly playing on to Sohail.
Sohail unlucky again when he beat the outside edge of Hales. Further close misses occurred as Hales played and missed and then finally Sohail had his reward as he removed Hales caught behind for 17.
Root came to the crease and the game entered a critical phase as Pakistan sought to remove England’s key batsmen. Shohail took the crucial wicket of Root for 3 with Hafeez taking the catch at first slip.
With an hour gone at drinks England were 51-2.
England progressed to 75 but then Rahat trapped Cook for LBW for 45. Cook desperately reviewed the decision but it was upheld and England lost their Review in umpire’s call. So Pakistan now had the two key wickets of Root and Cook.
So England’s vulnerable middle order of Vince and Ballance was now at the crease.
Yasir was given his first bowl in the match shortly before lunch.
Balance had a lucky escape when he played and missed at Amir in the next over.
At lunch England were 100-3 and Pakistan had a good morning session with the key wickets of Root and Cook.
After lunch Vince and Balance brought up the fifty partnership and despite the pressure on them they had built a firm foundation. Suddenly Younis Khan caught Vince at slip from Sohail Khan for 39. There was some doubt over whether the catch had carried but replays showed Younis’ fingers under the ball.
More was to come from Sohail and he removed Bairstow who was caught by Sarfraz for 12 with the score at 158-5.
Moeen Ali came next and saw England through to tea when the score was 184-5.
After tea Moeen and Balance continued to steady the ship bringing up the fifty partnership.
Ballance’s fine innings of 70 came to an end as Sarfraz took a sharp chance down the leg side from Yasir. The score now 224-6 . Chris Woakes now came to the crease to cheers at his home ground.
Woakes was not to last and was dismissed for 9 when a beauty from Rahat was caught behind. England now in trouble at 244-7.
It looked as if Moeen Ali had gone too when Yasir Shah had him caught close to the wicket from what seemed a bat/pad. Moeen referred the decision and the decision was reversed as no bat involved. Confusingly if the on field Umpire had given out LBW the decision would have been upheld as DRS showed Umpire’s call on LBW.
Moeen went on to make his half century in the next over.
A partnership then developed between Broad and Moeen who took the score on to 276 before a good catch from Azhar from the bowling of Amir removed Broad for 13.
An LBW appeal from Sohail against Finn was given not out and a Review confirmed that decision.
Moeen Ali was dismissed for 63 by Amir who had him caught behind by Sarfraz. Amir had now taken two wickets for one run in the space of six balls.
After a brief flurry between Anderson and Finn Sohail trapped Anderson LBW to finish with figures of 5-96.
