LONDON – Representatives of the Pakistan cricket team touring England Tuesday evening attended the book launch of 'White on Green' by Peter Oborne and Richard Heller at the Pakistan High Commission in London.
Speaking at the launch, Chairman PCB, Mr Shaharyar Khan recalled the many stories the book regales from the record first class defeat suffered by the Dera Ismail Khan players, the cricket life of Dr A.Q. Khan, the father of Pakistan’s nuclear bomb, and the amazing tale of the five Mohammed brothers, with the fifth brother Raess getting so close to Test cricket but unfortunately did not make it.
Coinciding with Pakistan's 2016 tour of England, Richard Heller and Peter Oborne tell the story of the vitality and variety of Pakistan cricket in White On Green.
Previously Oborne received favourable reviews for his critically-acclaimed work Wounded Tiger: A History of Cricket in Pakistan.
The book affectionately brings together stories and anecdotes relating to Pakistan cricket. Chapters recall the contributions of Shaharyar Khan, Majid Khan, Intikhab Alam and many others. It also cites present players Younus Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq as the greatest partnership.
In the authors’ own words: "(We have) presented a series of characters or episodes that seemed to us to provide some kind of dramatic connection to Pakistani cricket”. They added: “Cricket does not unite Pakistan but it gives millions of Pakistanis some which they all care about and, so it follows, a common repository for their emotions. For that reason we came to see cricket as a bridge in understanding the collective subconscious in Pakistan. The drama and turbulence of Pakistan cricket and echoes of the drama and turbulence of the nation’s history.”
His Excellency Syed Ibne Abbas, the Pakistan High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, praised the book and its clear love of Pakistan and cricket.
The launch was attended by a cross section of media, and Pakistan manager Intikhab Alam.
